Chapter Thirteen

First thing in the morning, Alex checked the main house. Bonkers lumbered to his feet and greeted him with his customary tail wagging and slobber. The sounds of someone brushing their teeth in the upstairs bathroom assured him all was well. Probably Dan getting ready for work as federal regulations didn’t allow banks to close four days in a row.

Back in his cottage, Alex pulled his riding leathers over his clothes, grabbed his wallet and keys, and drove straight to the Four Winds. Stribog and Morana weren’t there, so he went to the diner across the street for breakfast. Thankfully, the morning crew looked to be entirely different from the staff the other evening when he’d been there with Mike.

Over a meal of bacon, eggs, toast, and coffee, he analyzed the problems he faced. Before yesterday, he could have counted on the two Slavic gods staying close to him, but that arrangement had ended once Perun was free. Perun was Stribog’s enemy and his problem now. Likho was Alex’s, and he didn’t know how to fight him without Stribog and Morana’s help. He considered going back to the woods to leave a message for them with Koschei, then shook his head at the notion. How had his life reached the level of insanity where a plan like that seemed a rational option?

Worse, what if he couldn’t reach the two gods, or if he got a message to them and they didn’t care? How did one go about finding a being that could appear and disappear at will? More than that, even if he did manage to find Likho, how could he capture or fight him? In the flush of anger yesterday, while chasing him, he’d felt capable of taking the creature apart with his bare hands. But in reality, even if he found him and managed to grab him, Likho would likely just disappear—that or transform into the goblin, or worse. As a last-ditch option, he tried summoning Stribog or Morana by tossing his wish to find them out to the universe as a silent prayer, if a not very reverent one.

By half past nine he’d finished his meal and Stribog’s rental car was still nowhere to be seen. Time to take matters into his own hands. Over breakfast, he’d fleshed out the germ of his idea from last night and developed it into a plan—of sorts, anyway. One moment, it felt feasible, like it might have teeth; the next, it felt foolishly naive. Either way, it was the only plan he had, and he couldn’t sit around, maybe waiting days for Stribog, while Likho came after his family.

He left the diner but drove across the street anyway and knocked on both doors to be sure. As expected, the rooms were dark and there was no answer. He went to the main office. This morning’s clerk had no issue with looking up their information or sharing that they’d checked out yesterday afternoon. Alex would be shouting from a mountaintop in celebration if they’d found the horn and gotten out of Dodge, but he’d seen Likho last night.
